Evelyn with her future brother-in-law Chet in 1944. I believe this photo was taken on a weekend when my father was home on leave from the U.S. Navy. Chet and Betsy were engaged in March of 1944 and this photo could have been taken on that weekend.
The entire Akin family was fond of my father and everyone sent letters to him while he was in the Navy. In turn, he would correspond with his future in-laws. I recall an amusing story from one of my mother's letters. Betsy and Evelyn were roommates in Shreveport and Evelyn had received a letter from Chet. Knowing that Betsy Earle would succumb to her curiosity and peek at Evelyn's message, Chet wrote a note to her in the margin. My mother's reply: "You devil you, how did you know I was going to read Evelyn's letter? She wasn't here and I just thought I would sort of look at it. What would I find but that little note at the bottom to me. I felt almost like someone had caught me doing something I shouldn't." |
